William “Andy” Freels is the President of Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), Hyundai Motor Group’s North American research and development headquarters. Freels joined HATCI in 2005 as Durability Manager of the newly opened California Proving Ground. He was promoted to Vehicle Evaluation Team Lead, then to Director of the Vehicle Evaluation Group including Vehicle Evaluation in California as well as Safety Integration and Electronic Systems Development Teams in Michigan, and assumed his role as President of HATCI in January 2016. Freels began his career at General Motors in 1989 and held roles including program manager for customer measurement programs, Staff Engineer at the Desert Proving Grounds and global road test development in China, Mexico, Brazil and Europe. Freels is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He holds a B.A. in Psychology from Texas Tech University, a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas, and a master’s degree in Engineering Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
