Heather Thompson Speaking at Asilomar 2025

ITS-Davis is a respected convener of diverse stakeholders to promote progress in sustainable transportation policy. Over the past thirty years, the institute has hosted more than 100 major gatherings. Since 1988, ITS-Davis has hosted the Transportation Research Board’s biennial Asilomar Conference on Transportation and Energy, the premier international gathering on sustainable transportation policy for senior leaders in government, NGOs, academia, and industry.

UC Davis is located close to the state capital of California, renowned for its world-leading sustainable transportation and emission reduction programs. ITS-Davis’ experience in bringing science to policy means that our research helps to inform both California and federal policy dialogue and decision making. We actively disseminate research findings from all our programs through a variety of venues, including workshops, webinars, white papers and our blog. Our researchers speak at conferences across the globe and advise governments and industry in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Global South on sustainable transportation and ZEV policies.

Notable Recent Events

2025 Asilomar Conference

The 20th Biennial Asilomar Conference addressed the challenges of planning for and building resilient transportation systems in the context of increasing environmental concerns, global supply chain issues, and shifting policy priorities, while also reflecting on the significant progress made since the very first Asilomar Conference in the 90s.

Strategies to Decarbonize US Post-Sale Passenger Vehicles

The objective of the workshop was to assess the most promising strategies to accelerate the decarbonization of the U.S. on-road passenger vehicle stock, focusing on post-sale vehicles. The scope of strategies that were discussed includes accelerated scrappage, retrofitting vehicles to ZEV powertrains, and fueling ICEVs with low-GHG “drop in” liquid fuels.
