Drunk Driving Arrests Decline in Some Cities

May 10, 2018

“It’s pretty clear a lot of people use it as way of behaving safely on Friday and Saturday nights, which are the nights ride sharing is most popular,” said Dan Sperling, the director of the Institute of Transportation at UC-Davis. “Eventually the price of taking Uber will drop a lot and these services will increase tremendously in the future,” Sperling said. “It seems perfectly reasonable to clamp down on drunk driving laws when people have other choices.”

Volkswagen’s Penance Will Expand Nation’s Fast-Charging Network

April 23, 2018

EV drivers are more likely than gasoline-fueled customers to spend in the store. A 2017 study by Michael Nicholas of the International Council on Clean Transportation and Gil Tal of the University of California Davis supports that theory. Tal said EV owners will be bigger spenders than gas-pumping drivers for two reasons. “They are waiting a little longer and because of the price of most pure EVs, they are higher income people.”

Lew Fulton on the “Three Revolutions in Urban Transportation”

March 2, 2018

“The entrenched system takes an enormous amount of money to keep it going. There’s about 100 million new cars sold every year, with an average price around $25,000. That’s, right there, $2.5 trillion. If we just carved out some percentage of that, even if it were 2% or 3%, [it would] move us in a different direction, and improve our sustainability. It would be huge, but we’re not even willing to do that”—Lew Fulton, co-director at the STEPS program of the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies.
