2015 Asilomar Conference

The Asilomar Conference has become the leading international conference on transportation and energy. This invitation-only even attracts 200 experts and leaders from government, environmental NGOs, industry and academia to explore strategies and government approaches to address energy and environmental challenges—especially critical at a time of major shifts in energy supply and price. This year’s conference focused on near- and medium-term policy and market strategies, and supporting innovation to reach climate, economic and mobility goals for transportation.

• We have imagination. We’ve made big changes in the past and we can make them again.
• Transformational change is possible.
• Innovators are developing disruptive technolgies; innovation drives change.
• Significant uncertainty remains.
• We need a forward-looking, systems-based, integrated approach to policy.
• We need a pricing strategy—a fee/tax, cap-and-trade, or allowances, etc.-to decarbonize at an acceptable cost.
• California continues to be an important leader, a laboratory, and an incubator of new ideas.
• Time matters: We’ve come a long way, but we’ve only just begun, and we have no time to waste. Don’t get discouraged because transformation takes a long time.
• Consumers remain the wildcard.
• Travel behavior is the wobbly leg of the three-legged stool.
• In air travel, ‘big is better’ and it presents challenges.
