Introduction

Telecenters are the subject of a major ITS-Davis study sponsored by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Federal Highway Administration. A telecenter, also known as a neighborhood telecommuting office, offers a good alternative for telecommuting.

This project is a major component of the research program on Telecommunications and Travel, and was directed by Prof. Patricia L. Mokhtarian of the UC Davis Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

The objective of the program is to assess the value of neighborhood telecenters as an alternative work style and as a transportation demand strategy. Telecommuting provides more family and leisure time by reducing time spent commuting. Telecommuters and their managers report gains in productivity as a result.

As part of the program, ITS-Davis, in partnership with various local governmental and private agencies, has established and monitored the operations of 12 telecenters throughout California.
