The Cement Industry’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality Across the Value Chain by 2050
1:40pm - 3:00pm
1605 Tilia, Room 1103, West Village
The cement industry is one of the most significant energy intensive trade exposed industries. PCA, through its member companies, has developed a roadmap to carbon neutrality across the entire value chain of cement and concrete to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This presentation will highlight the unique approach to achieving carbon neutrality through direct reductions and avoided carbon emissions at each stage of the cement and concrete value chain. It will also emphasize the critical role that cement and concrete play within the circular economy. A high-level overview of the roadmap will discuss the technologies, the timelines, and the supporting policies required. Of particular note will be the discussion of concrete’s role within the cradle-to-cradle life cycle, concrete’s role as a carbon sink, and the use phase impact of sustainable, resilient structures now built with an expected multi-generational lifetime.
Rick Bohan is the Vice President of Sustainability for the Portland Cement Association. He has nearly thirty years of experience in the cement industry in the areas of research and technology. He leads PCA efforts in its development and delivery of a roadmap to carbon neutrality across the value chain by 2050. Rick is an editor for PCA’s Innovations in Portland Cement Manufacturing as well as a contributor to this and many other PCA publications. His background prior to PCA includes positions in consulting engineering with an emphasis on materials engineering. Rick has a B.S. in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Business Administration, and is a licensed professional engineer and a fellow of the American Concrete Institute.
